10 Missteps Made While Remodeling

Uncategorized

Not every homeowner is a seasoned remodeler. If you are tackling your own renovation, you can learn from other’s mistakes and have a less stressful experience. Here are some common pitfalls and how to avoid them to successfully complete your next home project.

1. Not considering everyday life : If your family only “lives” in three or four rooms now, adding another room will probably not benefit them. Only add square footage if you have a need for more space.

2. Failing to plan ahead : Not planning wrecks havoc with almost any project. Think what you’d like done and how you’d like the finish product to look. There is no need to rush into a remodel.

3. Neglecting to create a budget : Decide how much you want to put into the room you are remodeling and stick to that figure as closely as possible. You do need a little cushion for when the cost of materials increase unexpectedly or you have to call another contractor.

4. Not getting a permit : Any major remodel requires a building permit. If you don’t have one, it could mean excess fines and the possibility to have your walls reopened. You also may want the city inspectors that the work was done correctly so your family remains safe.

5. Disregarding a contractor’s history : Your contractor needs to be bonded and insured. Beyond that, you want someone you get along with. Don’t hesitate to interview a few contractors before making your final decision.

6. Ignoring your landscaping : Some remodels tear up your yard and then it needs to be replaced or repaired. Not considering this is a common oversight in remodeling projects. You need to plan for refreshing the landscape and including that cost in your budget.

7. Buying cheap materials : While sticking to your budget as much as possible, you don’t want to sacrifice quality and durability in your materials. It’s true you get what you paid for. Make sure the materials you use will hold up.

8. Avoiding going green : Converting to energy-efficient appliances, windows, lighting and other equipment should be done during renovation. Sustainable options mean a greater cost upfront, but they will pay off in energy savings later on.

9. Ignoring your surroundings : Adding on substantial square footage to your home when the houses in the neighborhood run smaller won’t help you when you want to sell. The median home price where you live sets the standard.

10. Making color choices in the dark : Whether your choosing paint, accessories or fabric to complete a remodel, bring the color into your home to see if it works.
